AB  - Lately, welfare organisations have been confronted with changes to their environment because, for approximately two decades, governance structures have changed dramatically. Gradually, quasi-market organised practices have been introduced in the organisations’ different fields of activity, motivated by the state’s desire to realise retrenchments and efficiently make a profit in times of slow economic growth, high unemployment and state budget deficits. Despite retrenchments, welfare states are nonetheless ‘economic giants’ and are indispensable in the process of realising the social state.
