The lienzo depicts historical events from about the eleventh to the sixteenth century and was created by Mixtec Indians. Discovered in the town on Tlapiltepec, which is located in the valley of Coixtlahuaca, it is part of a group of documents called the Coixtlahuaca Group. Since 1919 the lienzo has been housed in the Royal Ontario Museum in Canada. The contributors to this volume present basic information, such as what a lienzo is, to more specific information on the origin, format, and content of the Lienzo de Tlapiltepec. The discussion then becomes more advanced when the contributors engage the entire Coixtlahuaca Group to fully analyze the historical information depicted on the Lienzo de Tlapiltepec. A final essay deals with the copies of the lienzo that exist at the ROM and the technique of color reproduction. This will be the first book to engage the Lienzo de Tlapiltepec and the Coixtlahuaca Group of Mixtec documents and should thus garner attention from Mesoamerican specialists-- Provided by publisher SN - 9780806146294 LA - English N1 - edited by Arni Brownstone; with contributions by ...
