Lithium chloride was found to act as an efficient plasticizer for regenerated cellulose films, increasing the elongation at break sevenfold. Furthermore, [N4,4,4,4]OH is able to dissolve large amounts of chitosan, enabling to create a homogeneous solution of cellulose and chitosan. By adjusting ratios, the biological and physicochemical properties of blended films can be tuned. These films, which degrade rapidly in soil and seawater, offer a sustainable alternative to fossil-based plastics.
