Those motions have been studied mainly in the context of open ocean simulations and idealized configurations; however, their response during cooling and strong winds, is still unclear. Here, realistic simulations of the central Baltic Sea revealed not only that submesoscales are abundant in the basin but also that they are able to maintain shallow mixed layers during storms and quickly restratify between multiple wind events.
