Cephalopods are commercially used in Europe but not covered by the EU Common Fisheries Policy and therefore are not subject to fisheries management. This study investigates the stock structure of the commercially most important squids Illex coindetii and Loligo forbesii in the North East Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea. Using statolith shape and microchemical analyses as well as age determination, distinct stocks and migration patterns were identified. the results provide a basis for sustainable management and highlight deficits in European cephalopod assessment.<eng>
