Electron transfer between H₂, ferredoxin, NADH and NADPH is essential for the redox balance and energy metabolism in Thermoanaerobacter kivui. The hydrogenases Ech1 and Ech2 are important for energy conservation on H₂/CO₂ or CO. Deletion of Ech2 impaired growth on pyruvate and CO, but not on sugars. Ech1 could not be completely deleted, but downregulation led to similar effects. Deletion of the electron-bifurcating transhydrogenase NfnAB interfered with growth on all substrates, and mixotrophic growth studies with glucose showed H₂-induced growth inhibition.<eng>
