  <abstract type="Summary">In this cumulative habilitation thesis, carbohydrate-based ionic liquids and salts (CHILS) have been investigated as a novel group of molecules that combine the properties of ionic liquids and carbohydrates. Over the course of the 11 publications that are included in this thesis, several different types of CHILS from glucosamine, ribose, glucose and other sugars have been synthesized with high yields and flexible functionalisations. Glucosyl imidazolium salts have been found to exhibit a high biocomtability and a broad field of potential applications in hydrogels, biocatalysis and more.&lt;eng&gt;</abstract>
  <abstract type="Summary">In dieser kumulativen Habilitationsschrift wurden Kohlenhydrat-basierte ionische Flüssigkeiten und Salze (CHILS) als eine neue Molekülklasse, die die Eigenschaften von ionischen Flüssigkeiten und Zuckern verknüpft, untersucht. Über die 11 Publikationen, die in dieser Habilitationsschrift enthalten sind, hinweg, wurden viele verschiedene CHILS aus Zuckern wie Glucosamin, Ribose und Glucose in hohen Ausbeuten synthetisiert. Insbesondere die Glucosyl Imidazolium Salze zeigten eine hohe Biokompatibilität und breite Anwendungsmöglichkeiten in unter anderem Hydrogelen und Biokatalyse.&lt;ger&gt;</abstract>
