  <abstract type="Summary">Residential coal burning in small stoves has not faded out in many countries, yet comprehensive information on physical properties and the chemical composition of its emissions as well as which and how combustion parameters may affect them is scarce. Within this thesis, emissions from solid fuel burning were investigated by a variety of routine and custom analytical instruments, and the knowledge that was gained on the composition of these emissions was used to advance our current understanding how these emissions may adversely affect human health.&lt;eng&gt;</abstract>
  <abstract type="Summary">Das Verbrennen von Kohle ist in vielen Ländern immer noch eine gängige Praxis zum Heizen von Privathaushalten. Allerdings gibt es kaum Informationen über die physikalischen Eigenschaften und die chemische Zusammensetzung der Emissionen sowie darüber, welche Verbrennungsparameter diese beeinflussen können. In dieser Arbeit wurden die Emissionen aus der Verbrennung fester Brennstoffe mit einer Vielzahl von Messinstrumenten untersucht, und die Erkenntnisse über die Emissionen wurden genutzt, um das Verständnis darüber zu erweitern, wie diese die menschliche Gesundheit beeinträchtigen können.&lt;ger&gt;</abstract>
