  <abstract type="Summary">Particulate TiO2 has been used for long time as hydrogen evolution catalyst under UV light. Using solar senzitization instead of UV is desirable, but results in sluggish H2 production. Low solar photoactivity of TiO2 can be tackled with doping or nanostructuring, thus improving the light harvesting or charge carrier dynamics, studied here on self-doped TiO2 and rutile needles. The structure-activity correlation of two catalysts reveals that charge carrier dynamic is primary determinant and TiO2 catalysts that separate charge carriers efficiently are good candidates for solar H2 production.&lt;eng&gt;</abstract>
