Motivated by an observation of a varicose structure with extreme vertical wind velocities, PMSE data from MAARSY (2015–2021) were analyzed. More than 700 events were identified, and four pronounced cases were examined in detail using complementary wind, temperature, and aspect sensitivity data. The results show varicose structure as a recurrent and previously underestimated phenomenon in the polar mesosphere, with bore-like features and links to wind shear and temperature inversions. %L 530 %9 theses %9 Text %9 Hochschulschrift %R 10.18453/rosdok_id00005756 %U https://purl.uni-rostock.de/rosdok/id00005756 %U https://nbn-resolving.org/urn:nbn:de:gbv:28-rosdok_id00005756-8 %U https://d-nb.info/1418059641/34 %U https://doi.org/10.18453/rosdok_id00005756
