Dust from North Africa is regularly transported over the North Atlantic Ocean and plays an important role as a source of nutrients (especially iron) for the tropical and subtropical areas of the open ocean. Mineral dust was detected in sediment trap samples of two deep-sea moorings situated in the subtropical North Atlantic.
