Several protecting strategies were investigated for the synthesis and structural characterization of 1-azido and C-allyl galacturonates as suitable building blocks. Derivatization of azido and C-allyl moieties is described resulting in biotinylated compounds which can be used for the synthesis of labelled pectin fragments.
